IMG_3489

In June 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to sail aboard CatZero, a Challenge 72 yacht, on a voyage from Hull to Scheveningen. As I reflect on this remarkable journey, I am inspired to share my voyage log and convey the excitement and beauty that unfolded during those unforgettable four days at sea. Join me as we delve into the thrilling world of sailing, discover the bonds forged with a crew of fellow adventurers, and explore the breathtaking sights along the way.

Day 1: Setting Sail and Forming Connections

The journey began with a train ride from Blackburn to Hull, followed by a short walk to the birthing of CatZero. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the Skipper, marking the start of our extraordinary trip. As the rest of the crew arrived one by one, our anticipation grew. We exchanged introductions, shared our previous sailing experiences, and played icebreaker games that quickly brought us closer together. These were the individuals with whom I would spend the next four days, forging lasting bonds and embarking on a remarkable adventure.

Day 2: Navigating the Waters and Embracing Challenges

With the break of dawn, we set sail from Hull Marina, welcomed by a breathtaking sunrise. The calm and warm weather created a surreal atmosphere, almost reminiscent of a Mediterranean journey. As we made our way towards the North Sea, we honed our sailing skills through winch training and engaging in man overboard (MOB) drills. The adrenaline rush of hanging over the side of the yacht while rescuing the "MOB" float left us exhilarated and bonded us as a team. Split into watch shifts, we sailed through the day and night, working together seamlessly to navigate the waters, monitor the ship's log, and indulge in the beauty of the serene sea.

Day 3: Arrival in Scheveningen and Cultural Delights

After an eventful voyage, we arrived in Scheveningen, a vibrant port in the Netherlands. Following mooring and customs procedures, we were free to explore the bustling atmosphere of the city. A festival was in full swing, accompanied by live music, lively stalls, and a vibrant ambiance. The short walk from the marina to the heart of Scheveningen gave us a glimpse into the local lifestyle, where bicycles were the preferred mode of transportation. We savored the delights of the port, immersing ourselves in the culture and indulging in delicious food while overlooking the marina.

Day 4: Heading Back and Embracing Leadership

After a restful night and a refreshing shower, we prepared to set sail once again. Customs officers stamped our passports, granting us permission to leave the port. The journey back to Hull was characterized by pleasant winds, allowing us to switch off the engine and enjoy the thrill of sailing. I had the incredible opportunity to lead the crew in raising the Yankee sail, a pivotal moment that boosted my confidence and reinforced my aspiration to become a watch leader in the future. Along the way, we continued to learn about the yacht, refine our sailing techniques, and deepen our understanding of knots and points of sail.
